The Stanley Cup Finals wrapped up on Wednesday, July 7th with the Tampa Bay Lightning defeating the Montreal Canadiens to clinch their second-consecutive Stanley Cup. The NHL didn’t allow for too much downtime, however, as the season quickly ramped up with the Seattle Kraken’s NHL Expansion Draft, the end of the trade freeze, and start to the 2021 NHL Draft.
The first round of the 2021 NHL Draft starts at 8:00 p.m. ET on Friday, July 23rd. The Buffalo Sabres won the first overall pick in this year’s draft lottery, followed by the Kraken, Ducks, Devils and Blue Jackets. The draft will be held virtually via video conference call for the second season due to COVID-19, with Commissioner Gary Bettman announcing picks from the NHL Network studios.
