Odds, picks, best bet for Costa Rica vs. Canada in 2021 Gold Cup quarterfinals

Costa Rica and Canada face off on Sunday, July 25 at 7 p.m. ET in the 2021 Gold Cup quarterfinals. The match will air on FS1 and take place in Arlington, Texas. Costa Rica is a +135 regular time favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook, while Canada is a +235 underdog.

Costa Rica won all three of its group stage matches, collecting all nine points and finishing at the top of Group C. It took down Guadeloupe 3-1 in the opener and received a red card in the next two games but still came out on top with a 2-1 win over Suriname and 1-0 win over Jamaica. Canada also didn’t have much trouble in the group stage until it ran into the USMNT. The Canadians logged back-to-back 4-1 victories over Martinique and Haiti, but lost their final group stage game 1-0 to the Americans. Their six points was enough to finish second place in Group B and advance to the knockouts.

These teams have been dead even throughout their last five matches against each other, with four of them ending in draws and Costa Rica getting a 1-0 win back in 2013. They’ve all been low-scoring affairs, with the 2-2 draw in 2009 being the only game where more than two goals were scored. These are both very different teams since that match and Canada found its scoring ways through the group stage as Cyle Larin is tied with Romell Quioto for the golden boot with three goals so far. I’d expect the teams to be deadlocked after 90 minutes, but I think Canada will end up finding the edge either in extra time or penalties to move on to the semifinals.

Regardless of both teams enjoying some scoring success in the group stage, they both bring solid defenses to the table, so I’d expect this game to end in a 1-0 win for one of the sides, or a 0-0 or 1-1 final score with penalties deciding who advances. The safe bet should be under 2.5 goals in this one.
