The Philadelphia Eagles had one of their worst seasons in recent memory, finishing in last place in the NFC West with a 4-11-1 record. The last time the Eagles had a record under .500, it was the first year of Doug Pederson’s tenure in 2016. Philadelphia moved on from the QB-HC duo of Carson Wentz and Doug Pederson in the offseason. The Eagles first parted ways with Pederson and then traded Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts. Philadelphia will now usher in a new era of Eagles football with first-year head coach Nick Sirianni and second-year QB Jalen Hurts.
Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl 56 odds: +7000
The Eagles are considered one of the long shots to win Super Bowl 56 this season with 70/1 odds. Philadelphia isn’t in “rebuild mode”, but more so of a retool mode. The Eagles will try to be competitive team with new head coach Nick Sirianni, who was the former Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator. Sirianni will look to build around 2020 second-round pick Jalen Hurts, who showed flashes of promise in four games last season. The young dual-threat QB completed 52% of his passes for 1,061 yards, six touchdowns, and four interceptions. Hurts was effective in the running game with 354 yards and three touchdowns, despite having nine fumbles.
If Philly has any hope to win the Super Bowl, or at least have a shot to win the NFC East, it will fall on the shoulders of Hurts. Last year, we saw how inept the Eagles’ offense was with Wentz’s turnover issues. Along with Hurts, the Eagles’ offense will be young at the wide receiver spot with the addition of DeVonta Smith.
Smith, who was drafted with the 10th overall pick, should give the Eagles a true No. 1 option next to last year’s first-round pick Jalen Reagor. The Eagles’ offense should be explosive with Smith, Hurts, and running back Miles Sanders. Then on defense, the Eagles are not in bad shape, except at the cornerback spot. They still have Darius Slay, but Philadelphia does not have another quality starting cornerback on the other side. For them to make a deep run in a hypothetical sense, the Eagles need to shore up the cornerback position and get better play from the linebacker group.
