The Jacksonville Jaguars are among the most intriguing teams heading into the NFL season in 2021. This franchise may have never had this much attention heading into the year in their history. Urban Meyer is giving an NFL head coaching position a shot and we spent the past three years waiting for Trevor Lawrence to enter the pros.
Jacksonville won just one game last season for the worst record in the league, which is why they were able to land Lawrence. It’s not hard to improve on that win total, but expectations are certainly limited as the new era of Jaguars football is set to begin. Jacksonville needs a ton of rebuilding to all phases of this team, but it will be fun to watch this franchise grow in the early years.
Jacksonville Jaguars Super Bowl 56 odds: +8000
Lawrence has been pegged as the No. 1 overall pick ever since he took his first snap at Clemson, but we still haven’t seen him play a down at the NFL level. He should get the start Week 1 and has promising talent at the skill positions to work with. The Jaguars brought in his college teammate Travis Etienne, who is dangerous as a rusher and out of the backfield. Marvin Jones Jr. was signed in the offseason and is the veteran of the wide receiver group that also includes DJ Chark Jr. and Laviska Shenault Jr.
Defensively, the Jaguars ranked No. 31 in yards per play allowed, so that will need a complete overhaul in 2021. Jacksonville will need to be extremely opportunistic as a unit to have much success this season. The Jaguars had problems all over the defense with stopping the run and the pass. Getting to the quarterback should be very important for this group to improve dramatically, so this could be a big season for edge rusher Josh Allen. Jacksonville ranked second last in total sacks last season, and that area will need to get much better.
Jacksonville has the 28th best odds among the 32 NFL teams to come away with a Super Bowl victory in 2021. Oddsmakers are not giving the Jaguars much of a chance and for good reason. A team that finished 1-15 is bringing new personnel at key positions on the roster and coaching staff does not exactly lead to high expectations. They’ll need to hit home runs from day one with their rookie class and hope that Meyer can make the pivot to the NFL with aplomb.
