All 30 teams are scheduled to play on Sunday, July 4th with 16 games taking place throughout the day. The New York Mets and New York Yankees will play a doubleheader.
As we get closer to the first pitch of the day, which is scheduled for 11:05 a.m. ET when the Washington Nationals host the Los Angeles Dodgers, we will update the latest MLB news and notes as it relates to lineups and injuries.
MLB lineup and injury news — Sunday, July 4th
Nationals hitters land on injured list
Kyle Schwarber has blasted 25 home runs this season, but he will be off the field for a while as he recovers from a right hamstring strain. The injury happened on Friday as he rounded first base. Schwarber had been swinging for power incredibly well, knocking out 16 home runs in an 18-game stretch.
Washington catcher Alex Avila suffered bilateral calf strains, and he was sent to the IL as well. The veteran backstop is hitting .167 this season but has a .345 on-base percentage through 24 games played.
Diamondbacks’ starter moves to IL
Just about nothing has gone right for the Arizona Diamondbacks this season with a 23-62 record, which is by far the worst in baseball. Now, righthander Zac Gallen was placed on the injured list with a right hamstring strain. Through nine starts, the 25-year-old has a 4.17 ERA, and it is unlikely the Diamondbacks will rush him back too soon in a lost season for the franchise.
