It’s hard to see anything topping this for most random event on Friday. Rory McIlroy was at the driving range preparing for the second round of the 2021 Scottish Open when what appears to be some random guy just walked up to his bag, grabbed a club, and walked off.
Some random guy just walked up to @McIlroyRory and took his club and cover on the Scottish Open range and walked off with it, brazen! pic.twitter.com/F6MH6T2HTh

There’s a subsequent photo that shows the guy preparing to take a shot with Rory’s club. Or maybe now it is random guy’s club? Finders keepers, losers weepers? Possession is nine-tenths of the law?
The whole video is just an absolute treasure. The guy goes up appearing to grab for the driver because when you’re on the range, you really need to see how your driver is hitting. He grabs the cover but can’t quite grasp the driver and as he lets go, Rory’s caddie goes to put the club back in. So, the random guy then grabs what appears to be one of Rory’s irons and heads off.
At that point, Rory does a double take. He looks at the guy and you can almost see the whole situation processing in his head. Maybe he first thinks it’s someone he should know or some kind of tournament official. He turns back to his caddie then shoots his head back, thinking, “What the heck just happened?”
From there, Rory & Co. are sort of confused as to what they should be doing. It’s almost like they think some official is going to do something. They look around and just wonder what is going on.
In case you’re wondering, yes, the person was a spectator and he was ejected from the event. As for McIlroy? He ended up shooting an even par for the second round and is -1 through 36 holes. He’s tied for 91st and is not expected to make the cut.
