The three seasons of Sam Darnold with the New York Jets did not work out for anybody, and he will get a clean slate with the Carolina Panthers. Despite three years as a pro, it seems unclear what Darnold is as a quarterback at this point at just 24 years old. He was certainly not set up for success with the Jets, and Darnold will join a very underrated group of wide receivers. Hopefully, we will get a better feel for what Darnold’s future could be in 2021.
3950.5 passing yards: Over (-115) or Under (-115)
Our pick: Over
There is a very good chance Darnold has his best statistical season of his career in Year 1 with the Panthers. He threw for more than 3,000 yards just once in three seasons, though he never played more than 13 games in a year. For reference to last year’s Carolina quarterback, Teddy Bridgewater threw for 3,733 yards. Darnold has a good shot to exceed that with DJ Moore and Robby Anderson, who both went for more than 1,000 receiving yards for the Panthers in 2020.
23.5 passing TDs: Over (+100) or Under (-130)
Our pick: Under
You’ll need to pay a decent price for this bet to get the under at -130, but it’s unlikely we see Darnold throw 24 or more touchdowns this season. While Moore and Anderson had big years in 2020, they still combined for just seven receiving scores. Bridgewater threw just 15 touchdowns last season, and it’s hard to imagine Darnold throwing nearly 10 more touchdowns this year. We’re going after the under.
