Drew Lock vs. Teddy Bridgewater and Broncos QB fantasy football implications

The Denver Broncos have added some veteran depth to compete with John Elway’s draft pick. Who will win the camp battle between Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater?

Just one day before the 2021 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos put to bed any notion of them spending a first-round pick a quarterback by trading for Carolina Panthers QB Teddy Bridgewater.

Now with weeks before the start of the regular season, Bridgewater is embroiled in an old fashioned QB camp battle with incumbent starter Drew Lock. With the preseason getting underway, we’ll figure out soon which signal-caller Denver head coach Vic Fangio will entrust to lead the Broncos into a new year.

Latest camp news

So far, neither man has established themselves as a clear leader according to Broncos beat writer Jon Heath. Reports from Saturday’s practice indicated that Bridgewater is doing a decent job breaking out of his label as a checkdown QB by pushing the ball downfield more, so we’ll see if that starts to give him a leg up on Lock in the battle.

8/10/21: Head coach Vic Fangio announced on Tuesday that Lock will start in Denver’s preseason opener versus Minnesota this Saturday and Bridgewater will get the nod in their second preseason game at Seattle on August 21. Both QB’s will get more than one quarter in their respective starts.

Current DraftKings Sportsbook odds

Who will take Broncos’ first snap in 2021 regular season:

  • Drew Lock (+100)
  • Teddy Bridgewater (+120)
  • Any Other QB (+350)

Next preseason game: at the Minnesota Vikings

The Broncos are flying up to Minnesota this week for a few inter-squad practices with the Vikings before facing them in their first preseason game on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET. The entire week will give the Denver coaching staff plenty of film to evaluate how both QB’s perform under pressure against the competition with Lock getting the start under center.

Pre-Week 1 preseason prediction

I expect Bridgewater’s experience to ultimately give him the edge in this battle. He more than held his own as Carolina’s starter last season, completing 69.1% of his passes for 3,733 yards and 15 touchdowns. His career high of 7.6 yards per attempt indicates that he is making an effort to improve as a downfield passer and having receiving threats like Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler, and Noah Fant will only help improve that number.
