Breaking down the cut line for the 2021 Northern Trust

The 2021 Northern Trust has entered day 2. We break down where the cut line stands throughout the day.

FINAL UPDATE: The final cut is -1. Notable players to miss the cut include Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa, Si Woo Kim, Jason Kokrak, Lucas Glover, and Matt Jones.

The PGA Tour teed off the second round of the 2021 Northern Trust on Friday at 7:20 a.m. ET. Justin Thomas and Jon Rahm entered Friday tied for the lead at -8, three shots up on Harold Varner III. Six golfers follow at -4.

Some notable golfers that struggled on the first 18 holes include Charley Hoffman (+2), Collin Morikawa (+3), and Kevin Kisner (+5). All three rank well in the FedExCup Playoffs, with Morikawa coming into The Northern Trust ranked No. 1 in the world, but all will slip if they don’t get it going on Friday. The top 70 golfers in the FedExCup rankings at the close of Sunday will advance to next week’s BMW Championship. Morikawa will almost assuredly advance regardless of his performance this weekend, but a little momentum would be nice.

The first trios teed off on Friday at 7:20 a.m. ET and the final groups will be on the course at 1:39 p.m. ET. There’s a long way to go before we find out what the weekend field looks like for the Northern Trust.

How is the cut line determined?

The cut line at 36 holes is the top 65 players plus those tied at the end of that group. Some tournaments will have a second cut after day three (54 holes) if that initial group is 78 total players, but this is not one of those tournaments.
