WWE Champion Bobby Lashley has been the top dog on Monday Night Raw since February, triumphing in a lengthy feud with Drew McIntyre before quickly dispatching of Kofi Kingston at Money in the Bank in dominant.
The night after MITB, however, a new challenger appeared with Goldberg setting his sights on the Almighty’s championship and declaring him “NEXT”. And now the two are set for an old fashioned hoss battle at SummerSlam in Las Vegas on Saturday.
Why are they fighting?
Lashley initially rejected Goldberg’s challenge for a match but after the WWE Hall of Famer speared his manager MVP, he accepted. On the final episode of Raw this past Monday, the two finally got physical with the 54-year-old former WCW legend delivering a spear to the champ.
Real life perspective
Lashley is finally getting the championship run people envisioned for him when he first made his debut in the late-2000’s. A win over Goldberg at a “Big 4” pay-per-view would be a major addition to his legacy.
Meanwhile, the 54-year-old Goldberg only has a handful of matches left in him before calling it quits for good. The one thing he hasn’t done in his career is hold the actual WWE Championship and he’d cross that off with a win on Saturday.
It’s hard to imagine a scenario where Goldberg emerges victorious here as they’re most likely using him to give Lashley a marquee victory. The reign of the Almighty continues in Las Vegas.
