The UFC is back in the pay-per-view business this Saturday with a bout for the vacant heavyweight championship between No. 2 Derrick Lewis and No. 3 Cyril Gane. Though the actual champion in Francis Ngannou won’t be competing, it’s likely he gets the winner of this bout in his first action back in the octagon.
While it’s certainly controversial as to why an interim title is needed when Ngannou just won the strap in March, and said he’s very ready to compete in September, the interim belt still involves two quality heavyweights that should put on a good show.
But perhaps not a long one as Lewis is 25-7 with 21 career stoppages, and Gane has overwhelmed everyone he’s faced in MMA with a 9-0 record and wins over Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Alexander Volkov in his last two fights.
Also the co-main event brings in a pair of Brazilian 34-year-olds in need of a win when No. 5 Jose Aldo faces No. 9 Pedro Munhoz at welterweight. Aldo is 29-7 career but has dropped three of his last four bouts, while Munhoz is the same age with a 19-5 mark, but he’s lost two of his last three.
