Tracking eligibility to return from IR in 2020

In response to the Covid-19 crisis, the NFL made some adjustments to the rules regarding the use of the injured reserve designation. In order to provide NFL clubs more flexibility with their active rosters, there are no limitations on the number of players that can be placed on injured reserve with the opportunity to return.

Any player placed on the injured reserve list with a football or non-football related injury may resume practicing after three weeks. Once the player has resumed practicing, the club will have a 21-day window to promote them to the active roster.

The league has also approved the use of a COVID-19 reserve designation — a designation specifically applied to a player that tests positive for COVID-19, or someone who has come in close contact.

For practical purposes, the main difference between the injured reserve and COVID-19 reserve is the IR’s minimum three-week absence from the team. There is no such minimum requirement for the COVID-19 reserve list. The amount of time on COVID/IR depends on whether or not a player is symptomatic.

Here, we’ll track some of the most notable transactions to and from the NFL’s adjusted injured reserve list bound to affect your fantasy football rosters the most. We will note the date each player was placed on IR, as well as the week they are considered eligible to return and what their current status is.
