The Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are set to face off in Super Bowl 55 on Feb. 7 and oddsmakers expect to get a close game between the reigning champs and the resurgent Buccaneers. The Chiefs open as 3-point favorites on DraftKings Sportsbook ahead of the game, which will take place at Tampa Bay’s own Raymond James Stadium. The point total is installed 56.5. Can Kansas City win and cover the spread despite the opposition’s home-field advantage? Let’s take a look at some of the more notable performances we’ve seen from underdogs in the Super Bowl in recent years, courtesy of Sports Odds History.
Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady is used to being the top dog but has also been on the receiving end of an upset. His New England Patriots were favored by 12.5 points in Super Bowl 42 against the New York Giants and ended up falling short in a 17-14 loss. He was also a 14-point underdog in his first-ever Super Bowl appearance against the Los Angeles Rams in 2002. His Pats came away with a 20-17 victory in that matchup.
Chiefs signal-caller Patrick Maholmes has limited playoff performance but helped his team cover the spread as two-point favorites in Super Bowl 54. Kansas City claimed an 11-point victory over the San Francisco 49ers.
