Perhaps one of the best stories of the entire 2023 sporting calendar, the No. 8 seed Miami Heat fought all the way back from near elimination in the play-in tournament to make their seventh NBA Finals since 2006. The Heat have been powered by head coach Erik Spoelstra, veteran swingman Jimmy Butler along with significant efforts from Bam Adebayo, Caleb Martin, Kevin Love and Kyle Lowry. Not only were the able to bounce the No. 1 Milwaukee Bucks early in the playoffs, but the Heat are also the only team to defeat the Nuggets in Denver (Game 2) this postseason. Still, does Miami have enough left in the tank to eventually hoist the 2023 Larry O’Brien trophy?

The Denver Nuggets were top dog in the Western conference from wire to wire this year. Utilizing a corps of players that had many health issues over recent seasons, Denver has finally seemed to put it all together with two-time MVP Nikola Jokic at the center of everything.

Jokic’s size and skill combination makes him a one-on-one mismatch for anyone, and also leaves his fellow teammates in advantageous spots. Behind Jokic is the electric-Jamal Murray, who always seems to elevate his play in the playoffs. Murray is a big time shot-maker, but the Nuggets depth does not end there; Aaron Gordon, Christian Braun, Michael Porter Jr. and Bruce Brown have all been strong contributors along the way.

This feels like some sort of trick question, honestly. The Chiefs and their high-profile offensive personnel have been fantasy football cash cows through the current decade. Two-time NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes is on a steady path to becoming the greatest quarterback of all time, which is obviously no small feat. His No. 1 target — Travis Kelce — has a legitimate claim to hold the same accolade among tight ends. More recently, speedsters Isiah Pacheco and Skyy Moore have joined the party in Kansas City and have flourished under Mahomes and HC Andy Reid. Rashee Rice — who was just drafted in 2023 — will likely have the same fit.

So, who will be impacted the most in the upcoming 2023 season for K.C.? I’m going to take the easy way out and say Mahomes—He’ll likely top his offensive output from 2022.

Despite entering last season with high hopes, QB Matthew Stafford was plagued with elbow issues that ultimately ended his year prematurely. All-Pro WR Cooper Kupp was also shelved early in the campaign. They both should be ready to go in 2023, but after the team finished 5-12, the urgency to turn things around will be high. Of course, the Rams never seem to draft in the first round these days—just ask GM Les Snead.

The first two offensive players taken by the Rams in 2023 are very interesting. Steve Avila will be a major upgrade in the interior for L.A., but one has to wonder just how much Stafford has left in his throwing arm—over a thrilling career, Staffy has taken his share of damage. If Stafford’s issues flare up again, it will be — two-time CFP National Champion — Stetson Bennett that is next in line. The rookie would have Kupp on the inside to help get his feet wet, but I see Cam Akers as someone who might benefit on the fantasy football end of things.

Akers is a dynamic runner in the open field and can make plays in the passing game. Still, I’m not sure what rift he and HC Sean McVay had last season, but it seems to be squashed. With uncertainty around Stafford’s long-term future, lean toward the running game.

In reality, it may be former NFL All-Pro WR Keenan Allen that sees his fantasy production cut into. With their first selection this past draft (No. 21 overall), the Chargers added another big-bodied wideout amongst their corps—Quentin Johnston (6’4, 215 pounds) from TCU. Additionally, the Bolts took Johnston’s college running mate Derius Davis in the fifth round, who is a nice offensive weapon himself.

Combining all of this with Allen’s injury issues in 2022 translates to a possibility of fewer targets for the man who owns all of the Chargers’ rookie receiving records (most receptions, yards)—ones that first-year receivers Johnston and Davis will surely use as motivation.

Still, the elephant in Kyle Shanahan & John Lynch’s room is the quarterback spot—stop me if you’ve heard that one before. Whether Brock Purdy will be healthy enough come September seems to be the ultimate factor, but Trey Lance and Sam Darnold will be waiting in the wings if Purdy can’t go. Outside of signal caller, San Francisco is thoroughly deep with talent, doing well to bolster areas of need with their few picks in the 2023 NFL Draft.

San Francisco had gotten solid output for several consecutive seasons out of veteran Robbie Gould, and with his recent departure, Moody will be called upon to fill that void.

At Michigan, Moody was Mr. Reliable, producing 355 total points for the Wolverines. Kicking in the tough Midwest conditions, Moody never missed an extra point as a member of UM.

The UFC 289 main card features Amanda Nunes vs. Irene Aldana in a women’s bantamweight bout. We go over what time the match begins.

UFC 289 kicks off with a five-fight main card that is culminated with Amanda “The Lioness” Nunes (22-5, 13 KO) vs. Irene Aldana (14-6, 8 KO). The event will take place live from Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Two-division champion Nunes will look to defend her women’s bantamweight title against Aldana. In her last fight, Aldana scored a third-round knockout at UFC 279 against Macy Chiasson. For Nunes, she did well to avenge a recent loss in her last bout, confidently defeating Julianna Pena at UFC 277 via UD.

The main card for UFC 289 is scheduled to get started at 10 p.m. ET and will be available for purchase through ESPN+ PPV. Nunes-Aldana is the fifth fight on the card. Their bout is likely to get going around 1 a.m. ET, depending on the length of the undercard and previous matches on the card.

At DraftKings Sportsbook, Nunes (-320 ML) is favored to defeat Aldana (+265 ML) at UFC 289. The round total is set at 2.5 (-130/EV). In the “Method of Victory” market, “Nunes To Win By KO/TKO/DQ +100” yields the shortest odds, while “Aldana To Win By Submission +1400” reflects the longest. An outright “Draw” is priced at 50/1.

Josh Taylor and Teofimo Lopez Jr. are set to face off in a lightweight bout on Saturday, June 10. We break down when the fight starts and how to watch the full card.

To continue boxing’s run of high-quality bouts over the past couple of months, all eyes will be on Madison Square Garden this Saturday (June 10) when Teofimo Lopez (18-1, 13 KO) challenges Josh “The Tartan Tornado” Taylor (19-0, 13 KO) for The Ring and WBO super lightweight titles. With Davis-Garcia just passing in April and Haney-Lomachenko in May, will Taylor-Lopez be the next fight to dazzle the lightweight division?

How to watch Josh Taylor vs. Teofimo Lopez Jr.

With the event scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET, Main event ring walks for Taylor and Lopez are slated tentatively for 11 p.m. ET.

In the United States, ESPN+ (subscription required) will carry the event, while SkySports will serve as the U.K. broadcaster.

Fighter history

This will be Taylor’s first time back in the ring since winning a hotly-contested SD against Jack Catterall back in February of 2022. A Scottish southpaw, Taylor is always aggressive in the ring, never backing down from exchanging fists. Still, versus Lopez this Saturday in NYC, will there be any sluggishness on Taylor after 16 months between fights?

Lopez’ most recent scrap came just before last Christmas and was also at Madison Square Garden. In that matchup, he picked himself on the canvas in the second round to ultimately defeat Spanish lefty, Sandor Martin. Lopez’ only professional loss was a title bout versus George Kambosos in 2021. Now with a chance to earn back a couple of belts, Lopez — a native New Yorker — will look to upset Taylor in “The Big Apple.”

Fight odds

At DraftKings Sportsbook, Taylor is a slight favorite (-185 ML) to defeat Lopez (+145 ML) in his own backyard. The round total has been set at 10.5 (-225/+160). In the “Winning Method” market, every selection shows as plus-money; “Taylor by Decision or TD +175” yields the shortest odds while “Lopez by KO/TKO/DQ +450” reflects the longest. An outright “Draw” priced at 12/1.
