The Major League Baseball free agent market still has some notable names with the season nine days away, and we can remove one big name. Outfielder Yasiel Puig is set to sign with the Atlanta Braves, according to MLB.com reporter Mark Feinsand.
The signing comes a week after outfielder Nick Markakis elected to opt out of the 2020 season. After Ronald Acuña Jr., the Braves were looking at an outfield that would include Marcell Ozuna and Ender Inciarte. Puig offers some depth to rotate any of these options into the newly-added designated hitter role.
Puig split last season between the Cleveland Indians and Cincinnati Reds. He played 100 games with the Reds and finished with a .252/.302/.475 slash line before being traded to the Indians. In Cleveland, he finished with a slash line of .297/.377/.423.
Puig is currently averaging 188th in media fantasy rankings. By comparison, Acuña is second overall, Ozuna is 100th, and part time outfielder Austin Riley is 293rd. Puig will get a sizable bump, while Ozuna likely does not get impacted too much.
