The Los Angeles Dodgers made a stunning announcement on Thursday, four hours before their season-opener against the San Francisco Giants. The team has placed ace Clayton Kershaw on the injured list with back stiffness and re-called right hander Dustin May. May will get the start in his place Thursday evening.
May appeared in 14 games for the Dodgers last season and started four. He started four of his first five appearances before moving to the bullpen the rest of the season. He went 5 2⁄3 innings in each of his first three starts and then 5 1⁄3 in his fourth start.
He gave up seven runs over those 22 1⁄3 innings pitched as a starter. He finished the season 2-3 with a 3.63 ERA and 1.096 WHIP. He struck out 8.3 batters per nine innings and had a 6.4 strikeout to walk ratio. He split time between AA Tulsa and AAA Oklahoma City before an August call-up to close the season.
