The Kansas City Royals took a hit this weekend as All Star catcher Salvador Perez tested positive for Covid-19, according to beat writer Peter Grathoff. He has been asymptomatic, and he can return to the two team after more tests if they come back negative. Cam Gallagher is the primary backup at the catcher position.

Perez missed last season after suffering a partial tear of his UCL and having Tommy John Surgery in March 2019. He was on track to return this season, with hopes of returning to his previous All Star form. He was selected to the AL All Star squad every year from 2013 to 2018.

Perez has a career slash line of .266/.297/.442. In each of 2017 and 2018 he had 27 home runs and 80 RBIs, with 17 walks. He hit .268 in 2017 and .235 in 2018.
