New York Yankees second baseman DJ LeMahieu and relief pitcher Luis Cessa have both tested positive for Covid-19, according to manager Aaron Boone. LeMahieu is asymptomatic, while Cessa is dealing with mild symptoms, according to beat writer James Wagner.
If LeMahieu remains asymptomatic, he could still play on Opening Day if he is able to test negative twice. He would need less time to ramp up than a starting pitcher, so the just under three weeks remaining until Opening Day offers him time to get his two negative tests.
LeMahieu was the Yankees MVP last season, finishing with a slash line of .327/.375/.518 and a team-leading WAR of 6.0. Cessa served in a middle relief role, leading the bullpen with 81 innings pitched. Once Cessa is asymptomatic, he’ll need to test negative twice before he can return to the team.
