Toronto Blue Jays OF George Springer will begin the 2021 MLB season on the injured list due to an oblique strain, Manager Charlie Montoyo told reporters on Wednesday. Springer was injured during Spring Training on March 23. He will be placed on the IL retroactive to March 29. The Blue Jays open the season against the New York Yankees on Thursday afternoon.

Springer signed a six-year, $150 million contract with the Blue Jays back in January during free agency. Springer was expected to start in centerfield for the Jays in his first season. Instead, we’ll like see Randal Grichuk or Jonathan Davis start in CF in the opener against the Yanks. Springer isn’t expected to miss much time and Montoyo said he’ll be back “as soon as possible.”

Blue Jays LHP Robbie Ray will also head to the injured list with a bruised elbow and miss at least two starts.
