There’s a boatload of baseball on tap for Wednesday. Fifteen games are set to begin between 1:05 p.m. ET and 8:10 p.m. ET. There aren’t any super exciting pitching matchups this time around, but we’ve identified a pair of duels that could turn out to be interesting.
Best matchup: Carlos Martinez vs. Max Scherzer
The St. Louis Cardinals’ Carlos Martinez hasn’t been an All-Star since 2017 but still has something left in the tank. He’s struggled for the last two seasons and is off to a slow start this year, but the Washington Nationals could give him a good chance to bounce back. While Washington has one of the best team batting averages in baseball (.262), it has one of the worst scoring offenses around. If the Nationals continue to strand runners on base at a high rate, Martinez could have a good day.
Scherzer needs no introduction. The seven-time All-Star and 2019 World Series champion racked up 10 Ks in his last start and has tallied nine or more punchouts in two of his three appearances this season. Mad Max is consistently one of MLB’s best, and we should expect nothing less than excellence from him on Wednesday.
Sleeper matchup: Ian Anderson vs. Corey Kluber
Anderson is one of the more promising young arms MLB has to offer, but the Atlanta Braves right-hander hasn’t been able to best his 2021 debut just yet. He’s struck out 19 batters and given up 8 earned runs in 15.1 innings. The New York Yankees have a ton of talent but are playing like one of the worst ball clubs around. Maybe the rookie can have a breakout performance against a struggling powerhouse.
The Yankees are facing a ton of pressure to turn things around. Kluber hasn’t been able to go longer than four innings yet this year but isn’t far removed from his last All-Star appearance (2017) or AL Cy Young Award (2018). If Kluber eases into things in his first run with New York, he could show us a lot more than what he has so far.
Update: Tonight’s game between the White Sox and Indians has been postponed.
