Pitching matchups for Thursday’s MLB games

We take a look at the pitching matchups for each MLB game on the slate for Thursday, April 22nd.

Thursday’s MLB slate will be a short one. There are only eight games on tap and they’ll begin between 12:35 p.m. ET and 10: 10 p.m. ET. There are a few fun pitching battles worth tracking, and we’ve identified a pair here.

Best matchup: Ryan Weathers vs. Walker Buehler

The Dodgers-Padres rivalry is coming to life before our very eyes, and both sides will showcase talented, young arms on Thursday. Weathers hasn’t seen a ton of action as a 21-year-old but has only given up one run in 9.2 innings. Facing the Dodgers’ loaded lineup won’t be easy, but things could get interesting if the Padres let him get through more than four innings for the first time this year. His BABIP is just .105 this year.

Buehler hasn’t had a monster performance yet this year but has given up less than a hit per inning through 17 innings of work. He struggled with blisters last season but was one of the best in baseball when healthy. The 26-year-old finished in the 97th percentile in curveball spin last season and batters hit .105 against his fastball last season.

Sleeper matchup: Domingo German vs. Aaron Civale

This would normally seem like a much better matchup on paper, but the Yankees pitching has been suspect this year. German is 0-2 with an ERA of 9.00 through two starts but boasted an impressive 18-4 record and 1.15 WHIP in 2019. He might need some time to get back into the flow of things after missing the 2020 season and can be a lot better than he has been lately.

Indians starter Aaron Civale has transformed his delivery and it’s worked wonders for him. He's 3-0 and boasts an outlandish .73 WHIP through 20.2 innings. He’s not racking up punchouts but has been efficient and could go the distance against a Yankees’ lineup that’s fallen well short of expectations this season.
