Pitching matchups for Tuesday MLB games

Tuesday’s MLB slate will begin later than usual, as the first game of the night between the Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Indians is set to start at 6:10 p.m. ET. Let’s go over two of the best pitching battles to keep an eye on.

Best matchup: Max Scherzer vs. Trent Thorton

Nationals starter Max Scherzer got off to a rough start in 2021 but has picked things up since then. Scherzer’s BABIP is .200 and his LOB% is 100 through 25 innings pitched over four starts. He’s tallied at least nine strikeouts in three of his starts this year and hasn’t given up a run in his last 13 innings. Blue Jays starter Trent Thorton doesn’t have any quality starts this season, but has been extremely effective in short bursts. He’s appeared in six games and given up two runs in 9 ²⁄₃ innings. Can he continue to perform at a high level in the first start of his age-27 season? We’re about to find out.

Sleeper matchup: Kenta Maeda vs. Aaron Civale

Twins starter Kenta Maeda put together a trio of decent starts before getting demolished by the Athletics but can bounce back against the Indians. The real gem in this matchup is Civale. While Civale’s strikeout rate isn't great, his .177 BABIP and .88 WHIP are elite. He’s flown under the radar playing second fiddle to Shane Bieber but has been a very effective starter for the most part.
