Only six games will make up Monday’s MLB slate, so there’s a lot less to keep track of than usual. Unfortunately, there also won’t be any big-name pitchers starting this week. Some matchups could still be interesting, though. We’ve identified a pair of pitching battles that could be worth keeping an eye on.
Best matchup: Kyle Gibson vs. Alex Wood
Monday’s final game will be between the Texas Rangers and San Francisco Giants and both team’s starters have been solid this season. Gibson gave up his first two home runs of the year in his last start but is a perfect 3-0 this year with a 1.04 WHIP and 2.40 ERA. His strikeout numbers aren’t great, but his .248 BABIP is nothing to scoff at. Wood is also undefeated with a 3-0 record and boasts a .78 WHIP with a 1.96 ERA. Like Gibson, he’s not racking up Ks with each outing. However, his BABIP (.196) and LOB% (86.4) are top-notch.
Sleeper matchup: Dinelson Lamet vs. Antonio Senzatela
Lamet is only appeared in two games for the San Diego Padres this season and is working his way back from a bicep injury. He hasn’t given up a run in the four innings he’s pitched this year, but has give up five hits and walked one batter. The 28-year-old could exceed two innings for the first time this season against the Colorado Rockies on Sunday and improve a rotation that’s given up the third-fewest earned runs in MLB. Lamet’s BABIP was .234 through 12 appearances last season and more reps could help him get back on track.
