Pitching matchups for Wednesday’s MLB games

Fifteen games are scheduled to be part of Wednesday’s MLB slate, and matchups will start between 12:10 p.m. ET and 10:10 p.m. ET. The San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies have a doubleheader on tap, and the rest of the teams will play a single game. Let’s take a look at some of the more interesting pitching battles to watch.

Best matchup: John Gant vs. Brandon Woodruff

There are quite a few lopsided pitching battles on this slate, but the St. Louis Cardinals-Milwaukee Brewers matchup will feature two solid starters. Gant does lead MLB in walks, but his LOB percentage (84.7%) shows that he doesn’t implode under pressure often. Despite Gant’s tendency to walk batters, his ERA is a respectable 2.15. Woodruff boasts a .208 BABIP and a career-high LOB percentage (83.3%) through seven starts. He’s 13th in strikeouts with 51 Ks and has an impressive .77 WHIP.

Sleeper matchup: Trevor Rogers vs. Zac Gallen

The Miami Marlins’ Trevor Rogers has been one of MLB’s best young arms. The 23-year-old ranks 14th in strikeouts with 50 and has only given up eight earned runs in 38 innings. He’s only given up more than five hits once in seven starts, and his LOB percentage (84.6) is top-notch. Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen is a former Marlin and is having a solid season in his own right. His .258 BABIP is nothing to scoff at, and he hasn’t given up a home run since his 2021 debut on April 13.
