Pitching matchups for Thursday MLB games

We take a look at the pitching matchups for each MLB game on the slate for Thursday, May 13.

Thursday’s 12-game MLB slate will begin with a 12:20 p.m. ET matchup and end with 10:10 p.m. matchup between the Cleveland Indians and Seattle Mariners. We’ve looked over the schedule and picked out some of the best pitching battles to watch.

Best matchup: Jack Flaherty vs. Corbin Burnes

The St. Louis Cardinals‘ Flaherty leads MLB in wins and is 6-0 on the season. His BABIP (.240) and WHIP .94 are top-notch, and he’ll be up against one of the best in the game. The Milwaukee Brewers’ Burnes has boasted a .37 ERA through his first four starts but gave up four earned runs against the Miami Marlins his last time out. He’s still averaging 9.8 Ks per start with a ridiculous .55 WHIP. He’s likely to have a bounce-back performance given how he’s pitched so far this year.

Sleeper matchup: Trevor Rogers vs. Merrill Kelly

Rogers was initially scheduled to start on Wednesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but his team opted for a bullpen day. The 23-year-old has 50 strikeouts and has only given up eight earned runs in 38 innings. He’s only given up more than five hits once in seven starts, and his LOB percentage (84.6) is top-notch. Merrill Kelly might not move the needle for most fans, given how he’s played this year, but Rogers is gaining traction as a National League ROY candidate.
