Pitching matchups for Wednesday’s MLB games

We have another 15-game slate in the majors on Wednesday, with the first game starting at 1:10 p.m. ET between the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins. We are going to look at the best pitching matchup and the sleeper pitching matchup that could turn out to be a pitchers’ duel.

Here’s a look at the pitching matchups for Wednesday’s 15-game MLB slate on May 18th.

Best Matchup: Kevin Gausman vs. Wade Miley

This was a tough decision because Trevor Rogers, Shohei Ohtani, Corbin Burnes, Zack Greinke, and John Means are all scheduled to pitch on Wednesday. However, none of their matchups could rival what we could see at 6:40 p.m. ET between the San Francisco Giants and Cincinnati Reds.

Gausman has been the bonafide ace of San Francisco’s starting rotation this season. The 30-year-old has a perfect record of 3-0 and an ERA of 1.84 through eight starts. In his last start against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Gausman allowed 5 hits, 1 earned run, and produced a season-high 12 strikeouts in 8.0 IP. The veteran pitcher has pitched six innings or more in six out of eight starts this season.

As for Miley, he has a record of 4-3 and an ERA of 3.69 ERA in seven starts this season. The 34-year-old starter got roughed up his last outing against the Rockies. The veteran pitcher allowed 11 hits, 8 earned runs, 3 walks, and produced five strikeouts in 3.0 IP. It was Miley’s worst outing this season after his no-hitter on May 7 against the Indians.

Sleeper Matchup: Aaron Civale vs. Shohei Ohtani

To wrap-up our pitching preview, we are going to head out west as the Cleveland Indians and Los Angeles Angels wrap up their three-game set at 8:07 p.m. ET. Aaron Civale will be on the mound for Indians, while Ohtani will get the start for the Angels. Civale enters the game with a record of 5-1 and an ERA of 3.40 ERA through eight starts. In his last outing against the Seattle Mariners, the 25-year-old allowed 7 hits (2 HRs), 5 earned runs, 1 walk, and recorded six strikeouts in 6.2 IP.

The dynamic Ohtani, who leads the league in 13 HRs, will be back on the mound for his sixth start this season. The 26-year-old two-way player has a record of 1-0 and an ERA of 2.10. In his last outing against the Astros, Ohtani allowed 4 hits (1 HR), 1 earned run, 1 walk, and produced a season-best 10 strikeouts in 7.0 IP.
