Pitching matchups for Monday’s MLB games

We take a look at the pitching matchups for each MLB game on the slate for Monday, May 3.

Monday’s 10-game MLB slate will start a little later than usual. The Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies will get things going at 7:05 p.m. ET, and a pair of games at 10:10 p.m. ET will bring things home. Need a hand finding the best pitching matchups to watch? Here are two battles worth

Best matchup: Tyler Glasnow vs. Shohei Ohtani

Update: Ohtani was scratched from Monday’s start. Jose Quintana will start for the Angels.

The Tampa Bay Rays’ Glasnow is putting together a great year through six starts. He’s 3-1 with a .80 WHIP and ranks fourth in MLB with 56 strikeouts. The 27-year-old right-hander has reached double-digits Ks in three of his last four starts and will face some of the best batters in baseball in the Los Angeles Angels’ Mike Trout and Ohtani. Ohtani hasn't been able to wow the masses as much as some might want him to with his pitching, but he's absolutely blasting balls at the plate and is tied for fifth in the league with eight home runs. Ohtani has registered 23 Ks in 13 23 innings and is averaging a ridiculous 15.15 Ks per nine innings. Los Angeles is being cautious with the young star, but he could be in for one of his best performances yet if they let him pitch for more than five innings for the first time this season.

Sleeper matchup: Aaron Civale vs. Daniel Lynch

The Cleveland Indians’ Civale has slowed down some since getting off to a hot start but still has a 4-0 record and .92 WHIP through five starts. Few pitchers have kept runners off the base paths better than him this year, and he’ll battle against a Kansas City Royals rookie who’s making his MLB debut. The 6’6” lefty boasted a 26.2% strikeout rate in the minors, and his fastball is regularly between 95 and 97 mph. Will he struggle in the big leagues, or rise to the occasion?
