Thursday’s 10-game MLB slate will begin at 12:35 p.m. ET with Dodgers-Pirates and Brewers-Reds, and ends with a 9:40 p.m. ET matchup between the Royals and A’s. There aren’t a ton of superstar arms set to take the mound on getaway day, but there are a couple of key pitching battles worth watching. Here’s are a pair that could be interesting.
Best matchup: Anthony DeSclafani vs. Max Scherzer
The San Francisco Giants’ DeSclafani isn’t necessarily a stud but has MLB’s second-best scoring defense behind him. His 1.11 ERA and .249 BABIP have helped him secure a 5-2 record. The Washington Nationals are one of the NBA’s most efficient teams at the plate and boast a .247 batting average, though. Scherzer entered Tuesday only behind Shane Bieber and Tyler Glasnow in Ks. His .82 WHIP, .242 BABIP, and 89.1% LOB show that he doesn't give up much.
Sleeper matchup: Chi Chi Gonzalez vs. Trevor Rogers
The Colorado Rockiers’ Gonzalez isn’t much to look at, but the Miami Marlins’ Rogers appears to be MLB’s best rookie pitcher. He leads all rookies with 81 strikeouts this year and ranks 16th overall in Ks. Rogers’ WHIP (1.09) and ERA (1.97) are top-notch, and he’s one of three pitchers who’ve given up 15 or fewer runs through 68 innings pitched. Colorado is a middle-of-the-road team at the plate but could challenge Miami’s first-year ace.
