Pitching matchups for Wednesday’s MLB games

Wednesday’s MLB slate will feature 15 games and will begin at 1:15 p.m. ET with a Miami Marlins-St. Louis Cardinals matchup. A pair of games at 10:10 p.m. ET will wrap up the action, and quite a few notable pitchers will take the mound along the way. Here are a couple of pitching battles to watch.

Best matchup: Zach Wheeler vs. Clayton Kershaw

The last game of the night will feature two big-time starters. Wheeler is having a career year in his second season with the Philadelphia Phillies and ranks fourth in MLB with 112 Ks. He’s 4-3 with a 0.90 WHIP and a 2.29 ERA. Seeing him face off against one of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ top arms should be interesting. Clayton Kershaw is 16th in strikeouts with 95 and has a 0.97 WHIP this season. He’s not having his best season by any means, but he’s keeping runners off the base paths at a high level.

Sleeper matchup: Robert Stock vs. Jacob deGrom

The New York Mets’ deGrom is indisputably the best pitcher in baseball, so he’s always must-watch television. His numbers are otherworld at this point. The 32-year-old has a 0.53 WHIP and 0.56 ERA. deGrom’s .211 BABIP and 90.6 LOB% illustrate how ridiculous he’s been this year. Stock is making his 2021 debut for the Cubs and could post solid numbers against one of the worst hitting teams in MLB. The 31-year-old has played sparingly over the last two seasons, but deGrom is the main attraction, anyway.
