The Cleveland Major League Baseball team has a new name. The team formerly known as the Indians will now be known as the Guardians. The Cleveland Guardians announced the name change with this video on Twitter, narrated by Tom Hanks.

The organization announced on December 14, 2020 that it was beginning the process of changing its name. It moved away from the racist “Chief Wahoo” mascot and logo to the purely “C” logo while keeping the name Indians. The plan was to change the name as early as 2022, and announcing it in mid July of 2021 suggests 2022 is when we’ll see the complete change.
The Guardians name comes from a connection to the “Guardians of Traffic” sculptures on the Hope Memorial Bridge. In a recent 3News renaming poll, Guardians came in third with 19.8% of the vote. It finished behind Spiders and Rockers.
Below are pictures of the new G logo and then the “Guardians” name as it will appear on team jerseys and other apparel.
