The Boston Red Sox are close to acquiring Kyle Schwarber from the Washington Nationals, according to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers. Schwarber was considered a big piece at the trade deadline and is the latest in Washington’s big selloff, which includes Max Scherzer and Trea Turner.

Schwarber is hitting .253 with 25 home runs and 67 RBIs on the season. He brings a power bat to Boston’s lineup as the Red Sox gear up for a playoff push. Many expected Boston to be behind the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees in the AL East, but the Red Sox are at the top of the division with a little over a third of the season left.

The Yankees loaded up on hitting with Joey Gallo and Anthony Rizzo, so it made sense for the Red Sox to add some pop to the lineup. Schwarber has cooled off since his home run streak, but he fits in well for Boston’s needs.
