Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Tyler Gilbert took the mound for his first career MLB start Saturday against the San Diego Padres. He was pitching for one of the worst teams in the league, going up against a vaunted lineup contending for an NL wild card spot.

It didn’t matter.

Gilbert threw the eighth no-hitter of the MLB season, blanking the Padres 7-0 in 102 pitches. He had five strikeouts and three walks in the outing. The Diamondbacks got just their 38th win of the season, but this one will certainly be the most special.

Gilbert was acquired in the Rule 5 draft in 2020. After starting the 2021 season with the Reno Aces, the Diamondbacks promoted Gilbert to the majors August 3. He becomes the fourth pitcher to throw a no-hitter in his first start and the third Diamondbacks pitcher to throw a no-hitter.

We’ll see how Gilbert follows up this feat in his next start.
