The New York Knicks made a slew of moves prior to the deadline for team and player options on Thursday. PF Bobby Portis had his $15.7 million team option declined, while PF Taj Gibson and PG Elfrid Payton were both waived, per The Athletic’s Shams Charania. Gibson was set to make $10.29 million, while Payton’s contract was for $8 million.
These moves by the Knicks clears the way for No. 8 overall pick Obi Toppin to get playing time immediately in the frontcourt with Julius Randle the only PF under contract. The Knicks also have Mitchell Robinson at center and Kevin Knox at forward. RJ Barrett rounds out the majority of the core for New York, which also snagged SG Immanuel Quickley from Kentucky late in the first round of the 2020 NBA Draft on Wednesday.
