Charlotte Hornets guard Malik Monk has been on a hot streak offensively, but he’s been suspended for violating the NBA/NBAPA anti-drug program, the league announced Wednesday. His suspension will be effective immediately and will end when it is determined that he is complying with the policy. He will not be available for his team’s matchup with the New York Knicks.
Monk is averaging 10.3 points per game on the year but has averaged 15.7 points per game in his last 10 appearances. February has been his best scoring month of the season, as he’s averaged 16.7 points per contest.
Fantasy basketball analysis: Malik Monk
Monk has been operating as Charlotte’s primary bench scorer as of late and has been backing up combo guard Terry Rozier. His absence will likely benefit rookie swingman Cody Martin, who is averaging only 4.5 points per game this year on 16.6 minutes per contest. He’s made one start this season but has logged more than 26 minutes per appearance in his last seven games. Look for Martin to be a lot more involved moving forward.
Betting analysis: Hornets vs. Knicks
The Hornets (+108) are 2-point underdogs to beat the Knicks with an over/under of 208. Monk has had modest performances in his last two outings, and Charlotte scored less than 90 points in each one of those games. I’d bet on the under here for total points because the Knicks have the league’s 28th-ranked scoring offense and have lost three straight games. Charlotte should still get the win at home.
