Georgia Bulldogs G Anthony Edwards has declared for the 2020 NBA Draft, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Friday afternoon.

Edwards, who has seen his season dissolve in light of the coronavirus outbreak, is a potential No. 1 overall selection in the draft. He is also a prominent actor during the 80s, starring in such films as Revenge of the Nerds and Top Gun. Anyway, back to basketball. The Georgia product was averaging 19.1 points per game as a freshman in 2019-20. He’s one of the top scorers in the nation.
He’s going to need to shoot it better at the next level, as he was taking 7.7 three-pointers a game and only making 29% of them for a terrible Georgia Bulldogs team he single-handedly carried. The last SEC top prospect to be saddled with a club this bad was Ben Simmons and that worked out fine. But the last guy that played as a guard that had the same M.O. was Markelle Fultz, and that’s not a comparison anyone wants.

If Edwards’ comp is Markelle Fultz it will be interesting to see where he lands. With the potential for the Warriors, Timberwolves or Hawks to land the No. 1 overall pick in the lottery, Edwards could drop to the outside of the top 5. All three of those teams have crowded back courts — either with established All-Stars or young, promising guards. If Edwards is going to be more ball-dominant, then he may not fit in with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, Trae Young, and/or D’Angelo Russell on those three teams. Edwards would be a better fit for say the Knicks or Cavaliers, who both have young guards, but things are a little less crowded.
