It is a sad day in the NBA ... New Orleans Pelicans PF Zion Williamson is not expected to participate in the 2021 Slam Dunk Contest at halftime of the NBA All-Star Game this Sunday in Atlanta, Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes reported Tuesday afternoon. The media had asked Zion last week if he was going to partake in the event, which everyone was hoping he would. Williamson didn’t rule out the possibility. It appears now he will not join New York Knicks PF Obi Toppin in the contest. I guess we wait another year ...

As was mentioned above, Toppin is already set to be in the dunk contest, per reports. So we’re waiting to see who the other participants will be with just five days until the contest. Last season, Derrick Jones Jr. beat out Aaron Gordon to win the dunk contest. Gordon and Dwight Howard were participants with pretty storied pasts in the contest. Airplane Mode and Gordon actually put on a pretty decent show. We’ll see if Jones will defend his title. Chances are Howard and Gordon won’t be taking part again this season.
