The Hornets guard is expected to win the award as the betting favorite, though Edwards could get some votes.

The NBA announced the finalists for 2021 Rookie of the Year on Thursday night. Charlotte Hornets G LaMelo Ball, Minnesota Timberwolves G Anthony Edwards and Sacramento Kings G Tyrese Haliburton round out the top 3 and will be up for the award over the summer.

Ball is the current betting favorite on DraftKings Sportsbook at -2000 while Edwards (+900) and Haliburton (+10000) are the next two with the best “chances” of winning the award. Really, it’s Ball’s award and we may see Edwards steal a few votes here and there. Ball hurt his wrist but was able to get back in the lineup within a month or so and lock up Rookie of the Year. Edwards was favorite while Ball was sidelined, but ultimately he put up inefficient stats on a bad team all season.

Haliburton really never got the opportunity that Ball and Edwards ended up getting, playing most of his rookie season off the bench for the Kings. Had Hali gotten into the starting lineup for an extended run, he would have had a solid case for ROTY. The issue is Ball just had a better season overall and even Edwards showed flashes of being elite despite most people knocking his inefficiency.
