Phoenix Suns head coach Monty Williams has won the 2021-2022 NBA Coach of the Year award, per Shams Charania of the Athletic.
The news doesn’t come as a surprise as Williams and the Suns were able to improve off their NBA Finals appearance last season by posting a league-best 64-18 record in the regular season to claim the top seed in the Western Conference. Lead players like Chris Paul, Devin Booker, and Deandre Ayton continued to lead the lineup throughout the season while contributors like Mikal Bridges, Jae Crowder, and Cam Johnson made improvements from their Finals run a year ago.
For Williams, this award comes in his eighth season as a head coach as he has established himself as one of the well respected coaches around the league. Through stints with the Pelicans and Suns, he has posted a career regular season record off 322-299 with these two past campaigns easily being his best.
Phoenix is currently tied 2-2 with Dallas in its second-round series of the postseason.
