The San Francisco 49ers dominated the Cleveland Browns on Monday Night Football in Week 5, and improved to 4-0 with a 31-3 win. The 49ers averaged 7.8 yards per rush and the defense forced four Browns turnovers, all leading to an easy victory for one of two unbeaten teams in the NFL.
The 49ers forced a three-and-out on the Browns first drive, and things quickly escalated. Matt Breida took a handoff on the 49ers first offensive drive and ran it 83 yards for a touchdown. On the Browns next play, Baker Mayfield threw an interception. The 49ers did not score on that ensuing drive, but the play set the tone for the evening of Mayfield and the offense.
One big question coming into the game was what the return of Tevin Coleman from a high ankle sprain meant for Matt Breida, Raheem Mostert and the 49ers ground game. Coleman led the team with 16 rushes to Breida’s 11 and Mostert’s seven. Breida led the team with 114 yards, Coleman had 97, and Mostert added 34.
On defense, Nick Bosa had a whale of a game. He finished with two sacks, two tackles for loss, and recovered a fumble. The 49ers sacked Mayfield four times, and secured two interceptions. The Browns showed some signs of life early in the first half, and could have cut the 14-0 lead to one score. They were shut down there, and they just could never get fully on track. And when you lose the turnover battle 4-0, you’re often in for a long day.
Fantasy football analysis
Coleman got more snaps, but clearly Breida is going to get extensive work to complement Coleman. Against bad defenses, both are quality starts, and given Kyle Shanahan’s history, the ground game will remain a fixture as long as they’re healthy. You can make an argument to work either into your fantasy lineup.
It was a disaster of a game for Cleveland, and we have to wonder what to make of Baker Mayfield. he was 8 of 22 for 100 yards with the two picks. Jarvis Landry had four receptions for 75 yards and Nick Chubb rushed 16 times for 87 yards. Odell Beckham was shut down, to the tune of two receptions for 27 yards.
The 49ers defense was a star of this one, and has justified itself as one of the best fantasy defenses in the game right now. If you have a chance to add them on waivers, do so.
