The Seattle Seahawks won a wild one over the San Francisco 49ers, beating them in overtime on Monday Night Football by a final score of 27-24. Both teams had chances to put the game away in the fourth quarter, but it ended up coming down to the absolute last possible second.
Neither of the quarterbacks put on their best effort, but Russell Wilson made enough plays late to bring back his Seahawks late and get the win in overtime. He finished the night with 232 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception, and scrambled for 53 yards. Meanwhile, Jimmy Garoppolo struggled in a big way. He threw for 248 yards with a touchdown and an interception, but accuracy was a problem. His receivers didn’t help him much of the night, but he also struggled putting the ball on target in some big spots.
The 49ers had the last shot with Chase McLaughlin on for a 47-yard field goal, but the rookie kicker shanked it wide. He was in due to a quad injury that left Robbie Gould inactive. He drilled a 47-yard field field goal to tie the game at the end of regulation, but couldn’t convert in overtime.
Entering Monday, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson had leap-frogged Wilson for the best odds to win NFL MVP. He had put together a great performance against the Cincinnati Bengals, and previously had handled the New England Patriots. However, it would not surprise me if by the AM, Jackson and Wilson were dead even in the MVP odds.
You could make a strong argument for either quarterback at this point, and right now I kind of hope they win co-MVP.
The 49ers drop to 8-1 with the loss while the Seahawks improve to 8-2. The Seahawks head into a bye this week, while the 49ers will host the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. The 49ers and Seahawks meet again in Week 17, and odds are good that gets moved to prime time if the NFC West division is on the line. It should make for a fun close to the regular season.
