Selecting a defense in DFS is determined as much by weekly opponent as anything else. And more so than any other position in your lineup. No matter how good the defense is, you’re not going to want to start them against the New England Patriots or Kansas City Chiefs. However, if you see any defense going against the Miami Dolphins, go all in and grab those guys.
Let’s take a look at three defenses you are going to want to stay away from if you are trying to maximize value heading into Week 2.
Los Angeles Chargers (@ Lions) $3,200
We are in for a good ol’ fashion shootout on Sunday when the Los Angeles Chargers head up north to take on the Detroit Lions. The Chargers gave up 24 points to a backup quarterback in Jacoby Brissett last week and struggled to stop the run with Marlon Mack going for 174 rushing yards. Going up against a much better quarterback in Matthew Stafford for a team that throws a ton does not sound like a successful matchup for this Chargers’ defense.
Lions (vs. Chargers) $3,000
The Lions’ defense just got done blowing an 18-point lead against the Arizona Cardinals last weekend — rolling out the red carpet for a rookie quarterback on a team that had a disaster of an offense in 2018. The Chargers did not miss a beat at running back with Justin Jackson and Austin Ekeler combining for 115 rushing yards, and Ekeler going for 96 yards receiving and three touchdowns. Philip Rivers can still put up numbers as we saw last week when he went for 333 yards with three touchdowns. Avoid this game from a defensive standpoint.
Dolphins (vs. Patriots) $2,100
Why would the Dolphins be on this list considering they are the second-cheapest defense in DFS going into Week 2? It’s because they should be dead last and honestly should be given away for free. There was a lot of quit in Miami during the opening week of the season. Making Lamar Jackson look like the best quarterback in the NFL is an issue. Miami should be below the Raiders, which are going up against the Chiefs this weekend. Even if your strategy is to go cheap with defense, avoid the Dolphins at all costs.
