The Cincinnati Bengals weren’t close to being Super Bowl contenders ahead of the 2019 season, but few people thought they’d be as bad as they were. The Bengals kicked off the year by losing 13 games straight, and a ton of things went wrong along the way. Star wideout A.J. Green didn’t play a single regular season snap because of a preseason ankle injury, the defense was one of the worst against the league, and faith was lost in quarterback Andy Dalton.
Cincinnati still has to decide on how it should handle Green’s impending free agency. Will he be allowed to walk, or be designated a franchise tag? The future of the Bengals’ most dynamic offensive weapon will determine what moves they should make in the 2020 NFL Draft. Dalton will almost certainly be replaced by Joe Burrow with this year’s No. 1 selection, and Joe Mixon has one year left on his contract. A new era is around the corner.
It isn’t all bad for the Bengals though. Tyler Boyd put together a second consecutive 1,000-yard season and is proving he can be a legitimate top option. Several other members of the receiving corps were able to make leaps and bounds in the absence of Green as well. Establishing a strong young nucleus will be key to Cincinnati’s success moving forward, and it has a chance to start with an important building block in April.
