Gardner Minshew has been ruled out of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Week 9 matchup against the Houston Texans because of a thumb injury and could be replaced by a rookie on Sunday. Head coach Doug Marrone said that Oregon State product Jake Luton will get first-team reps this week on Monday but a starter hasn’t been named just yet.

Luton was a sixth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and has yet to play a snap in the NFL. He’ll be given a chance to compete with seventh-year veteran Mike Glennon, who was signed to the Jaguars’ practice squad in September. Glennon hasn’t played in a regular season game since November of 2019.

Minshew was a sixth-round pick just a year ago and rose to prominence after Nick Foles went down with an injury early in the year. Things could get interesting if Luton gets the call and excels against an AFC South rival.
