Less than two seasons removed from being draft No. 15 overall, quarterback Dwayne Haskins is out in Washington. The Washington Football Team is releasing the quarterback, according to NFL Media. The news comes following Ron Rivera announcing Taylor Heinicke would start this Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles if Alex Smith is unable to go. Steven Montez is now the third QB on the roster.

The news is not entirely surprising. Haskins violated the NFL’s COVID-19 protocols a week ago, marking his second violation. He was spotted in a strip club while not wearing a mask. He was fined and stripped of his captaincy, but he still ended up starting in Week 16.

Alex Smith’s calf injury had not fully healed and Haskins started against the Carolina Panthers. Haskins completed 14 of 28 passes for 154 yards and two interceptions while also losing a fumble. Heinicke replaced him and completed 12 of 19 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown in the 20-13 loss.
