It’s been a rough season of football for the Michigan Wolverines, and it might be enough to convince the university and head coach Jim Harbaugh it’s time to part ways. The team is 2-4 and after Covid-19 could cost them a game against Maryland, it could also cost them their annual rivalry game with Ohio State.

Harbaugh is a competitive person, but he might not entirely miss the chance to get thump in Columbus once again. Michigan has been a good football team during Harbaugh’s tenure, but with a 1-4 bowl record, no national titles, and not really even sniffing a chance at one by the end each season, Harbaugh has not met the grand expectations that came with his arrival from the NFL.

Now, Harbaugh might be considering a return to the NFL, per Pro Football Talk. There’s been talk of an eventual return to the NFL almost since his arrival in Michigan, and it’s no surprise that it comes back up amidst Michigan struggles. Harbaugh was an instant success in the NFL, and while the San Francisco 49ers struggled in his final season, teams would leap at the chance to hire him.

The Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, and Atlanta Falcons have all fired their head coach, and we can expect more openings soon. The Bears have not fired Matt Nagy, but if they struggle down the home stretch, they’ll be mentioned given Harbaugh’s history with them as a player. The Lions could be in the mix for the Michigan head coach, but one wonders if Harbaugh might want out from the Michigan media.

Harbaugh’s contract at Michigan runs through the end of 2021. There will be plenty of interested openings if Harbaugh wants to make the leap back to the NFL.
