The New York Jets have fired defensive coordinator Gregg Williams following a disastrous defensive call in Week 13, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini. The Jets led 28-24 in the closing seconds after a huge stop. After a punt with 35 seconds left, the Raiders moved down the field and on their final offensive play, Derek Carr found Henry Ruggs III after Williams dialed up a cover zero defensive scheme.

The Jets are a bad football team. Firing Williams isn’t going to change that. He’s a notoriously aggressive play-caller, and it bit the Jets in the butt big time on this play. Safety Marcus Maye voiced his frustrations after the game, and once defensive leaders are calling out the game plan, a change was not going to be too far off.
