It has been a banner weekend for the NFC East! Following the New York Giants stunning upset of the Seattle Seahawks, the Washington Football Team pulled an even bigger stunner in claiming the Pittsburgh Steelers’ zero. The Football Team went into Pittsburgh and beat the Steelers 23-17.
The Steelers opened as north of a touchdown favorite, but the line moved lower and lower until it was down near 5.5 points by kickoff. The betting public was all over Pittsburgh, but oddsmakers knew better. Maybe it was the short week, maybe it was Washington’s underrated defense, but either way, Washington stunned Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh struggled to get anything going with any consistency, rushing for 21 yards. Ben Roethlisberger threw for 283 yards, but both teams struggled in the red zone. At one point, the two teams had 12 attempts from the opposing team’s 1-yard line and they managed a single touchdown.
Alex Smith stepped up late, finishing with 296 yards and a touchdown. The Football Team lost Antonio Gibson to a toe injury and Peyton Barber and JD McKissic stepped in to replace him. Barber didn’t do much in the ground game, while McKissic caught 10 passes for 70 yards. WFT did just enough and got a huge interception after taking a 20-17 lead to get the win.
Washington improves to 5-7 and is tied with the New York Giants atop the NFC East. Pittsburgh drops to 11-1 but remains atop the AFC North.
