Considering the injury report as you address the Week 2 fantasy waiver wire

The fantasy football waiver wire is critical to league success. We break down key injuries from Week 1 that will impact decisions for the Week 2 waiver wire.

The first NFL Sunday is officially a wrap! We still have the Monday Night Football double-header, but in the meantime, it’s time to start considering your fantasy football waiver wire options. The Week 2 waiver wire can make or break a league, and the injury report will be critical to consider.

From a fantasy perspective, we did not see a large number of injuries, but there are some notable names to track heading into the coming week. The biggest news was Marlon Mack suffering what is feared to be a torn Achilles. Le’Veon Bell, DeVante Parker, and Blake Jarwin are the other notable injuries.

Below is a rundown of notable skill position injuries, and who stands to benefit as you consider what to do with your waiver wire priority. We’ll offer updates on each injury as new information comes along this week.

Marlon Mack, RB, Colts

Mack was carted off in the second quarter with what initially was reported as an ankle injury. A further examination revealed what is being reported as an Achilles injury that could cost Mack his season. Nyheim Hines and Jonathan Taylor ended up splitting work. Taylor rushed 9 times for 22 yards and caught 6 passes for 67 yards, while Hines rushed 7 times for 28 yards and a touchdown and caught 8 passes for 45 yards and a touchdown.

If Mack is done for the year, this looks like it could be a fairly even split for the time being. Taylor is the long-term answer, so if you have to pick one of the two, he’s the choice over Hines. But I’d recommend putting in waiver claims on both.

Le’Veon Bell, RB, Jets

Bell injured his hamstring, tried to play through it, and then aggravated it and had to leave the game after six carries and two receptions. Hamstrings are going to be an issue in the early-going given the lack of traditional offseason programs. Maybe Bell turns it around quickly, but I would be surprised if he wasn’t questionable and a game-time decision at best for Week 2 vs. the 49ers.

Frank Gore grabbed six carries and Josh Adams had two carries and two receptions. I would expect them to split work if Bell is unable to play. Adams was a recent practice squad addition while Gore is nearing the end of his Hall of Fame career. Neither is worth starting, and I wouldn’t even really claim either off waivers outside of the deepest of leagues. In that case, Gore likely has a higher floor while Adams has a slightly higher ceiling.

DeVante Parker, WR, Dolphins

Parker injured his hamstring in the third quarter and did not return. He had four receptions for 47 yards at the time of the injury and finished as the leader in both categories. Preston Williams could not take advantage of his absence, with Ryan Fitzpatrick spreading the ball around the rest of the day.

Williams is the only Dolphins receiver after Parker worth a look on the waiver wire, and even that’s pushing it with how this offense looked in Week 1.

Blake Jarwin, TE, Cowboys

The Cowboys fear they might have lost Jarwin for the year to a torn ACL. The Cowboys tight end depth chart after Jarwin includes Dalton Schultz, Blake Bell, and Sean McKeon. Schultz is worth a look in the deepest of leagues and two-tight end leagues, but Dak Prescott will likely spread the ball out more to reserves like Tony Pollard. While Pollard is a solid handcuff to Ezekiel Elliott, his stand-alone value is only in deeper leagues.
