UPDATE 1/21: The Eagles have hired the Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni.

Just three years removed from the team’s first and only Super Bowl championship, the Philadelphia Eagles have let go of head coach Doug Pederson. The Eagles finished at 4-11-1, but initial expectations were that Pederson would hold onto his job, but owner Jeffrey Lurie wasn’t sold on Pederson’s vision for the team and coaching staff moving forward.

Franchise quarterback Carson Wentz also regressed during Pederson’s tenure, posting his worst season so far in 2020. Wentz wants a trade this offseason, but the departure of Pederson could change that dynamic, as it appeared to be a break from Pederson that Wentz was wanting.

In the end, it appears Pederson had grown tired of Lurie and GM Howie Roseman micromanaging the team, per Ian Rapoport. Itt was probably a mutual parting in some ways. Whoever takes over the job will be heading into a tough situation if they want control.
