UPDATE: Albert Breer is reporting the negotiations between Meyer and the Jaguars are focused on facilities upgrades and staffing.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have aggressively pursued former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer, and they could be close to finalizing a deal for him to become their next head coach. The two parties met again on Wednesday and are “in advanced talks to see if they can finalize a deal,” per Adam Schefter.
Meyer has been connected to NFL teams in the past, but this is the furthest the process has moved along. He’s met multiple times with Shad Khan and the Jaguars brass, which is more than we’ve seen of him in past coaching cycles.
It’s unclear for the time being how much control Meyer would gain with the Jaguars. Whether or not he wants GM responsibilities, owner Shad Khan has said he will be more actively involved in the personnel side of the business. Khan had previously ceded that work to Tom Coughlin, but after firing Coughlin in late 2019, the Jaguars owner started to take a more hands-on approach. I suspect that is an active part of the negotiations between the Jaguars and Meyer.
